FACIAL INFORMATION GUIDE

Understanding the different types of facials we offer can save you a lot of time. Facials can run the gamut from a basic clean-up to alpha-hydroxy to collagen to galvanic facials and more!

FACIAL SPAS

Facial Spa treatments can help revive and rejuvenate tired skin. There are a variety of treatments to choose from depending on skin type. Facial Spa treatments are available at professional beauty spas. These Facial Spa treatments can help rid your skin of impurities by unclogging pores and removing dead skin cells. Additionally, Facial Spa treatments help to balance out uneven skin tone, reduce pores and tighten, tone and moisturize the skin.

Typically, a professional facial spa treatment can include the extraction of blackheads or other blemishes, which may be painful. However, the overall experience is relaxing since many aestheticians incorporate aromatherapy as well as a facial spa massage to soothe stressed-out muscles

HOW TO PROPERLY CLEAN YOUR FACE

Many men assume that only women need to be concerned about facial care; however, maintaining a clean and clear face is important for men too. Healthy skin portrays youth and confidence, which are important characteristics in the workplace and relationships. Follow these steps to maintain a clean and clear face.

  1. Select the right cleanser for your skin type. There are three skin types: oily, normal, and combination.

  2. Turn on your faucet, allowing it to run until the water is tepid. Wash your hands with soap and then splash your face with water.

  3. Apply the cleanser to your fingertips, a clean washcloth, or a facial-cleaning sponge.

  4. Start above your eyes and wipe the cleanser in an upward motion, over your forehead, and towards your hairline.

  5. Begin just below your eyes and wipe in a downward motion over your cheeks. Repeat until you've thoroughly cleaned both cheeks.

  6. Scrub your temple areas and neck with cleanser.

  7. Rinse your face and neck with tepid water.

  8. Blot your skin with a clean towel until it is completely dry.

HOW TO GET RID OF FACIAL ACNE

Whether acne is a reoccurring problem or just surfaces as the occasional pimple, knowing the proper way to get rid of acne should be the first tool in everyone's beauty box.

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Start or continue a basic routine of cleansing and moisturizing your skin. Know what your skin type is and use the appropriate cleanser. Wash and moisturize first thing in the morning and before bedtime. Rub the cleanser in gently, not pulling or scrubbing, which will only damage the skin further.

  2. Treat blemishes by dabbing a small amount of over-the-counter acne-fighting medication onto the pimple, starting with the mildest strength of the medicine. Avoid picking, popping, or pressing on any blemish. This can cause scarring and spread the bacteria, creating more acne.

  3. Fight or prevent allover acne problems with a medicated face wash made especially for oily complexions. After cleansing, apply a thin layer of salicylic acid over the entire face using upward sweeping motions.

  4. Choose makeup, moisturizers, and sun protection that are oil-free and labeled non-comedogenic, which will not clog skin pores. Most mineral makeup is a good choice.

  5. Avoid touching your face with your hands because this brings more oil, dirt, and bacteria to the face. Avoid resting your chin in your hands or fingering a current blemish. If possible, pin hair back from the face to keep the hair's natural oils away from the face.

ANTI-AGING FACIAL TREATMENT

Many people want to fight the effects of aging on the skin. As we get older our skin loses elasticity, which can cause wrinkles and sagging. Anti-aging treatments combat the appearance of wrinkles, nourish skin and replace the nutrients needed to maintain a healthy, youthful glow. Most anti-aging treatments have collagen and elastins that your face needs on a daily basis.

CLEANSERS

The first step to most facials are cleansers. Facial cleansers usually gently remove daily dirt, oil, and grime. When choosing a cleaner, be sure to look for products that contain glycolic acid or alpha-hydroxy acids. These acids dissolve and wash away the dead skin cells to allow the healthy new cells to shine through. When washing your face, working the cleanser into a lather and using water as cold as you can stand can be helpful. Hot water will dry out the skin, making wrinkles more prominent.

ANTI-AGING CREAMS

Follow your cleansing routine with a good anti-aging moisturizer. The key things in an anti-aging cream are how well it moisturizes, anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory ingredients, and how well it stimulates collagen production. Look for creams that contain hyaluronic acid, which is a very powerful moisturizer that can completely penetrate the skin. Antioxidants repair skin damage, collagen reduces fine lines and wrinkles and anti-inflammatory ingredients reduce puffiness. Use the moisturizer liberally after cleansing at night before bed. You will typically see results within a few days.

MICROCURRENT FACIALS AND MICRODERMABRASION

Microcurrent facials help tone the skin and encourage production of new skin cells. A facial device is applied directly to the skin which stimulates the muscles and tissue. Microdermabrasion is a facial in which a light abrasion or scrubbing method is applied to the skin to remove dead tissue, scars and damaged skin. Both are usually done in a spa or dermatologist's office and provide a temporary lift to the face.

HOW TO CARE FOR DRY SKIN

Only a lucky few have 'normal' skin; the rest of us have a dry, oily or combination variety. If dryness is your problem, read on.

  1. Remember the basics: Drink at least eight glasses of water a day to keep your skin well hydrated; eat a high-quality diet rich in fruits and vegetables; and limit sun exposure.

  2. Wash your face no more than twice a day with a gentle cleanser formulated for dry skin. Washing more often can dry your skin.

  3. Take short baths or showers and use warm rather than hot water. Try to limit showers and baths to one per day. Use soap only where you need it, such as on your underarms and groin.

  4. Add a few teaspoons of olive oil or lavender-scented oil to your bath.

  5. Pat your skin dry after washing. Avoid rubbing yourself dry with a towel, which can whisk away essential oils needed for moisture.

  6. Apply moisturizer while your skin is still damp. Heed the advice of many experts in choosing a moisturizer, less is more when it comes to the ingredient list.

  7. Understand that moisturizers contain barriers, which keep water on the skin, and water binders, which whisk moisture from the inner layer of the skin to the top layer. Look for ingredients such as glycerin, alpha hydroxy acids, urea, and lactic acids (binders), combined with petrolatum, lanolin, or silicone derivatives (barriers). You have a choice of hundreds of products. Aestheticians or other skin care experts may be able to advise you on your specific needs, but trial and error will probably be your best bet in finding the product that's right for you.

  8. Aim for a comfortable level of humidity in your home or office. Too much heat or too much air conditioning can rob your skin of moisture.

HOW TO CARE FOR OILY SKIN

Do you have overproductive sebaceous glands, which are responsible for oily skin? The good news is this skin type is generally slower to show fine lines, wrinkles, and discoloration. The downside can be more frequent breakouts, large pores, and a greasy appearance. The following steps can minimize the negative effects.

  1. Stick with the basics: The experts suggest cleansing your face two or three times daily with good old soap and water. Pack a premoistened cleansing pad if you won't be around a water basin throughout the day.

  2. Follow the recommendations of aestheticians on which types of soaps or cleansers to use and that work well for your skin, you should continue using them.

  3. Follow the recommendations of aestheticians and shower or bathe in tepid rather than steaming-hot water. Hot water can strip your skin of needed moisture, while cold water can shock your skin.

  4. Avoid using cleansers that tend to over-dry skin. This paradoxically causes your skin to produce even more oil than usual.

  5. Use only non-comedogenic moisturizers and sunscreen products this means they're oil-free and won't clog pores.

  6. Keep in mind that oil glands are very sensitive to stimuli such as hormones, heat, and (some say) fatty food can trigger them.

  7. Remember that your efforts to keep your oily skin clear can only go so far, as some studies indicate that oily skin is hereditary.
